Moderator | AdvisorMrs Lois Dougan Tretiak is the Senior China Advisor to The Economist Group and is currently based in Beijing.
A resident of Hong Kong and China now for almost 30 years, she first visited the People's Republic of China in 1972. After 21 years living in Hong Kong, she moved to Beijing in 1998. Mrs. Tretiak has been Vice President and Director China, Economist Corporate Network and Chief Representative, Beijing and Shanghai , The Economist Group, advising companies on China investment strategies and implementation. She regularly analyses,forecasts and presents to corporate executives on China's political and economic developments, as well as the business operating environment in China. She is highly acclaimed as a speaker and moderator of discussion at conferences and small group meetings. She has been hired by many clients over the years to provide insight briefings to visiting Chief Executive Officers and often to Board Meetings being held in China , as well as presenting and advising clients at their headquarters around the world.
Between 1993 and 2002, she developed and chaired the series of Economist Conferences' Roundtables with the Government of the People's Republic of China since 1993, at which senior business executives and Chinese officials met to discuss central government policies. She has chaired similar dialogue with the Shanghai government and many China industry conferences.
She directed, edited, and partially wrote one of the earliest studies of private investment in China, Joint Ventures in the Peoples' Republic of China, (published in December 1985. She directed and co-authored the follow-on study, Operating Joint Ventures in China (published April 1993). Both were published by the Economist Intelligence Unit. She also created China Hand, the monthly-updated reference work on China business conditions and regulations. For a decade, she edited the twice-monthly business newsletter Business China. In 1981 in Hong Kong, she began bringing senior executives together on a regular basis to discuss China business issues; this was the start of what is now known as Corporate Network.
Prior to joining The Economist Group, she has been the Editor, East Asian Research Centre, Harvard University; Editor, East Asian Legal Studies Program, Harvard University Law School; Assistant Editor, Far Eastern Economic Review; Lecturer, Social Science Division, York University, Toronto.
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh , Mrs Tretiak also attended Yale University , the East-West Centre in Honolulu , Hawaii , and the University of Hong Kong Chinese Language School. Mrs Tretiak is proficient in Mandarin.
