Simon Cox is the Asia Emerging Markets Editor for The Economist, based in Hong Kong. He covers the economies of emerging Asia, especially China, for The Economist newspaper. He was previously based in Delhi, covering Indian business and finance. He joined the newspaper in 2003, tracking the fortunes of the world economy for its online edition before becoming Economics Correspondent, writing about the World Bank, the IMF and the WTO.
During his career at The Economist, Simon has written a variety of special reports and white papers: He was the editor for Economics: making sense of the modern economy; He was the author of a Special Report looking at the world's arduous recovery from the global financial crisis ("The Long Climb", 2009), China's surprisingly resilient economy ("Pedalling Prosperity", 2012), The technological ambitions of India and China ("High-tech Hopefuls", 2007) and Korea's social and geopolitical divisions ("Parallel Worlds", 2013). In 2008, he edited "The Growth Report", published by the Commission on Growth and Development, chaired by Nobel laureate Michael Spence. He was a contributor to the Oxford Companion to the Economics of China (OUP, 2014). He has also contributed pieces to the FT's Alphaville blog and Foreign Policy magazine on the economies of China, Japan and India. Simon is a frequent guest on television and radio, including CNBC, Bloomberg, the BBC and CNN. He is also the originator of the "Li Keqiang Index", which serves as an unofficial proxy for China's growth.
Simon presents to business, economic and investment conferences, provides briefings to corporate planning and board strategy meetings and addresses client forums. His key focus is around global and regional economics in Asia, including China, India, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. He shares strong analysis across the broad range of the world's emerging markets.
He has spent over ten years with the Economist, including stints in London and Delhi. In 2014, he spent a couple years in finance, as Managing Director and Asia-Pacific Investment Strategist for BNY Mellon, before returning to The Economist in 2016. Simon studied at Cambridge University, Harvard University, and the London School of Economics where he was sponsored by the Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation. He currently lives in Hong Kong.
